Epilogue

Ten Years On

Ten years on and I have to admit I feel like the embarrassed face emoji, you know the one? It’s the one I use to reply to my wife when I’ve forgotten to do something. It’s the same one I send to my daughter when I say the wrong thing. I have to admit I use that emoji way too many times!

I can’t believe it’s been ten years since we launched out on this adventure, leaping out of the box called normal. Sure, the adventure continues with new seasons, new challenges and new goals, but I’d kinda hoped this book would be well-read before this time! Several times I’ve set out to pull the final editing together and I’ve just not got the right people in the right place at the right time.

That embarrassed emoji is me right now — it’s how I feel about the delay in getting this book in your hands.

But delay isn’t always bad. Think wine, cheese or whisky and you’ll appreciate that sometimes good things take more time. In fact, sometimes the delay is what makes the final product better; intensity of flavour, maturity and timing are all potential benefits of delay.

Bringing this book to you ten years after the experience has allowed me to make reflections on the experience, emotion and effect of the stories I’ve told you in the preceding pages. The ten year delay has allowed the message to mature inside me and bring a new level of intensity to my understanding of family life. They say grey hair is the crown of wisdom that only comes through time. I am learning that age allows advantage to be gained by waiting. So I don’t think my delay is a bad thing for you.

Time also allows for what my mother used to call the “proof of the pudding”. My personality type is all about the evidence, so I like to check in on myself that what I say is working. And ten years on I can honestly say there is some fantastic fruit in our family from the learning and application of the principles I have shared here. What does that mean for you? You, too, can learn from our experience, reflect on what it means for you and make some decisions on how you will intentionally build your strong family.
